Claude Fable 5 Moves to Usage Credits as Promotional Window Ends July 7
From July 7, 2026, Claude Fable 5 leaves standard subscription allowances and requires usage credits at $10/$50 per million tokens. Anthropic says the change is temporary.
As of July 7, 2026, Claude Fable 5 is no longer covered by standard subscription allowances. Pro, Max, Team, and premium Enterprise subscribers who want to keep using it must now enable usage credits - a metered billing layer priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Without credits enabled, Fable 5 access stops with no grace period.
The End of the Promotional Window
When Fable 5 was restored on July 1, Anthropic included it on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7. That transition window has now closed, moving the model onto per-token billing on top of existing plans.
What Subscribers Should Do
- Enable usage credits in the Claude Console.
- Set a monthly spending cap to avoid surprise bills from long agentic sessions.
- Watch output tokens - at $50 per million, generation is the expensive side.
- Fall back to Claude Opus 4.8, still included on plans, for routine work.
Temporary, Anthropic Says
Anthropic has framed the move as capacity-driven and temporary. A Claude Code lead engineer clarified that the company does not intend to keep Fable 5 as a permanent paid add-on and aims to restore it as a standard part of subscriptions once capacity allows. The change has drawn public frustration from some subscribers, which Anthropic has acknowledged.
