Claude Fable 5 Usage Credits Explained (July 2026)
From July 7, 2026, Claude Fable 5 moves from subscription allowances to usage credits. Here is exactly how the new billing works and how to set it up.
TL;DR
As of July 7, 2026, Claude Fable 5 is no longer covered by your standard subscription allowance. To keep using it on Pro, Max, Team, or a premium Enterprise plan, you must enable usage credits - a metered billing layer priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. If credits are not enabled, Fable 5 access stops with no grace period. Anthropic says the change is temporary.
What "Usage Credits" Actually Means
Usage credits are billing on top of your plan, charged per token you consume with Fable 5. Your subscription still covers Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 4.5, and everything else at their normal limits; only Fable 5 is metered separately. Through July 7 there was a transition window where Fable 5 was included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits, but that window has now closed.
The Price
- Input: $10 per million tokens
- Output: $50 per million tokens
That is the same rate as the Claude API list price for Fable 5, and double Opus 4.8's $5 / $25. Output tokens dominate most bills, so the $50 output rate is the number to watch.
How To Set It Up
1. Open the Claude Console and go to billing.
2. Enable usage credits for your account.
3. Set a monthly spending cap so a runaway agent or long session cannot surprise you.
4. Confirm Fable 5 appears in your model picker again.
Do this before your weekly allowance is exhausted. Once the allowance runs out without credits enabled, Fable 5 simply becomes unavailable until you turn credits on.
Estimating Your Cost
A rough monthly estimate: (monthly input tokens / 1,000,000 x $10) + (monthly output tokens / 1,000,000 x $50). A developer generating, say, 5 million input and 2 million output tokens a month would pay about $50 + $100 = $150 on top of their plan. Long-context and heavy agentic workloads climb faster because they read and write far more tokens.
Is This Permanent?
Anthropic has stated it does not intend to keep Fable 5 as a permanent paid add-on. A Claude Code lead engineer clarified that the model will return to standard subscription plans once capacity allows. Treat usage credits as a bridge, not the final state.
