Claude Opus 5 Becomes Default on Claude Max, Strongest Model on Claude Pro
Claude Opus 5 rolls out as the default model for Claude Max subscribers and the most capable model available to Claude Pro users.
Consumer Claude just got a major upgrade. With the July 24 release of Claude Opus 5, Anthropic has made the model the default for Claude Max subscribers and the strongest model available on Claude Pro.
What Subscribers Get
Max subscribers now open every conversation on a model that scores 96.0% on SWE-bench Verified, tops the GDPval-AA v2 knowledge-work leaderboard, and carries a 1M-token context window — no model-picker fiddling required. Pro subscribers gain access to the same model as their plan ceiling.
The upgrade is immediate across claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
The Consumer Lineup Now
- Claude Free / Pro default: Sonnet 5, the everyday-work model launched in June
- Claude Pro ceiling: Opus 5, the strongest model on the tier
- Claude Max default: Opus 5, with the premium tier's higher usage limits
Why It Matters
Default-model decisions shape how most people actually experience AI — the majority of users never change settings. Putting a near-frontier model behind the default click on the premium tier is a statement about unit economics: Opus 5's price-performance is strong enough that Anthropic can afford to serve it as the everyday experience.
It also sharpens the Max value proposition. The tier previously justified its price primarily through usage limits; it now leads with the most capable default model Anthropic offers to consumers, at a moment when the company is reportedly preparing for a public listing.
